The Mary Lutz sampler is actually a reproduction of an antique Pennsylvania-German showtowel stitched by Mary in 1835. I condensed the motifs into a sampler-sized design. The original showtowel was stitched on homespun linen using pink and olive green silk threads. The bottom of the show towel has "1835" cross stitched very, very close to the bottom edge on a small scale. I suspect it was added at a later date. The bottom edge is a bit raggedy and my guess is that the year was originally stitched on a larger scale, but worn away with time. So, I charted the year both ways. If you want to be true to the original sampler as it is now stitched, use the smaller year.
Our sampler is stitched on 36-count "Linen" from Weeks Dye Works using one strand of Needlepoint Silk over two threads of linen. Cross stitch is used throughout. Our frame was custome made at our local craft store.
Stitch Count: 203 wide by 249 high.
Needlepoint Silks Used: 124, 986.
